Partner institutions announced last month include Carnegie Mellon University, Northwestern University, Ohio State University, Purdue University, University of Chicago, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Wisconsin-Madison and Washington University in St. Louis.

Together, these institutions represent one of the most concentrated and research-intensive AI talent ecosystems in the United States, providing leadership across machine learning, fundamental models, robotics, healthcare AI, materials discovery, energy systems, and enterprise applications.

“Universities are making remarkable advances in artificial intelligence, but too often there is a gap between research and real-world impact,” said Michael Franklin, Morton D. Hull Distinguished Professor, senior advisor for computing and data science, and faculty co-director of the Data Science Institute. “Partnerships like this help bridge that gap by providing founders with the resources and connections they need to turn their breakthroughs into companies.”

ARC is a collaborative platform designed to support early-stage AI companies emerging from leading research institutions, providing structured selection, mentorship, cloud infrastructure support, and access to carefully selected investors to help founders accelerate commercialization and scale their innovative AI technologies.

Through this partnership, ARC will work with university innovation and entrepreneurship teams across Third Coast Foundry institutions to identify leading AI startups and provide them with a structured path to growth. University partners will work with ARC in candidate identification, technical diligence, and founder support to ensure the highest quality teams are selected.

“Midwestern universities were early Internet pioneers and are now leading fundamental AI research,” said Ajay Singh, co-founder of AI Research Commons. “We are excited to partner with the entrepreneurial journeys of these outstanding university-based startups.”

Selected companies will receive:

Get up to $350,000 in startup credits for eligible services through Microsoft for Startups, access to leading AI models through Azure, 1:1 technical guidance from Microsoft experts, and discounts on essential tools like GitHub, Microsoft 365, and LinkedIn Premium.

Systematic selection and screening support through ARC’s expert review network.

Practical guidance from experienced AI operators, researchers, and investors.

Third Coast Foundry coworking space in San Francisco’s AI Corridor.

An invitation to present to Mayfield’s AI Pathfinders, an exclusive community of leading AI founders, operators, and industry executives.

Opportunity to exhibit at Mayfield AI Start, a select gathering of emerging venture capital managers focused on AI.

As part of this initiative, University of Chicago student interns will work directly with participating startup companies. This program includes undergraduate and MBA students participating in a full-time summer internship. Students support startups with projects ranging from market research and product strategy to business development and commercialization plans.

“Midwestern universities have always produced world-class AI research and talent,” said Vijay Reddy, general partner at Mayfield AI. “This partnership gives founders access to the infrastructure, mentorship, and investors they need to turn breakthrough ideas into lasting companies.”

This initiative aims to lower the infrastructure barrier for university spinouts and connect Midwest AI founders directly to national capital networks.

“This partnership reflects our commitment to applying cutting-edge AI research to venture-scale companies,” said Samir Maekar, managing director of the Polsky Center. “By connecting these leading Midwest institutions with AI Research Commons, we are strengthening the region’s AI commercialization pipeline and ensuring founders have access to the infrastructure, mentorship, and investor networks they need to scale.”

“We’re excited to support this effort and help more university-founded AI startups translate their great research into real-world impact. Through Microsoft for Startups, we’re proud to provide promising founders with the technology, technical guidance, and go-to-market support they need to build faster, scale smarter, and sell more,” said Bakari Brock, GM Director of Global Partnerships.

The program will begin selecting startups in spring 2026, and selected teams will be announced for the program’s kickoff in early summer.

If you are a university-based founder interested in this program, please submit a >> short expression of interest by May 1st.

#University #Chicago #announces #partnership #Research #Commons #Microsoft #accelerate #startups #Midwest #Polsky #Center #Entrepreneurship #Innovation

Release date Tuesday, April 14, 2026 Selected early-stage startups will receive technical and go-to-market support from Microsoft for Startups, up to $350,000 in startup credits for eligible services, access to AI models, connection to the Bay Area AI Investor Network and support from UC Chicago student interns.
