You can calculate your maximum heart rate by subtracting your age from 220.

Your browser does not support iframes.

Your browser does not support iframes.

Using this scale, a 50-year-old person The maximum heart rate is 170 beats per minute (bpm), while a 60-year-old person has a maximum heart rate of 160 bpm.

Zone 2 corresponds to 60-70% of your maximum heart rate. If you are 50 years old, it is 100-120bpm, and if you are 60 years old, it is 96-112bpm.

Experts say it’s difficult to tell whether you’re in zone 2 based on your breathing or effort alone, and recommend using a smartwatch or fitness tracker to stay within the proper range.

Zone 2 exercises also include slow running, cycling, swimming, a rowing machine, or a stair stepper.

Many people think that running faster will burn fat and lose more calories, but some experts say this may not be true.

Burning fat relies on a steady supply of oxygen, but when your heart rate spikes, less oxygen is available, forcing your body to rely on other fuel sources like carbohydrates and protein.

However, in zone 2, this does not happen because the oxygen supply remains abundant, which can lead to greater fat burning.

Travers says, “When your heart rate increases, your oxygen uptake decreases. With less oxygen, you can’t burn fat fast enough, so your body relies on other readily available energy sources.”

A growing number of fitness experts are recommending Zone 2 training, claiming it’s perfect for fat loss and improving fitness (stock image)

Some experts say zone 2 exercise can help improve your fitness.

High-intensity workouts often lead to rapid fatigue, forcing you to stop early. However, Zone 2 workouts allow you to last longer, provided you are willing to let others pass you, in some cases.

Experts say this extra time can help strengthen your heart muscle and mitochondria, the energy factories in your cells, further improving your fitness.

Zone 2 training began trending in 2025 following research published by University of Colorado exercise physiologist Iñigo San Milan, Ph.D. This study suggested that cyclists who trained at Zone 2 levels for longer periods of time may be able to ride longer and faster.

However, subsequent observations were less clear about the benefits of zone 2 aerobic exercise.

A 2023 meta-analysis that tracked nearly 6,000 people who followed an exercise plan found that those who did high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or sprint interval training (SIT) for at least four weeks improved by up to 3.9 times in key fitness metrics than those who did endurance training (ET).

In this paper, ET is defined as continuous exercise at moderate intensity. This exercise might have included light running or moderate cycling.

Experts have advised people to get a smartwatch to track their fitness, saying it’s the best way to track heart rate (pictured).

Another meta-analysis, also conducted in 2023, found that there were no significant improvements in body fat percentage among people who performed HIIT exercise compared to those who performed continuous aerobic training (CAT).

Some experts warn that overemphasizing zone 2 can lead to lower intensity exercise and no benefits.

But some say fitness could be improved by encouraging more people to exercise or by sticking to exercise habits they can control.

Further research shows that top athletes train in different heart rate zones, often in an 80/20 ratio, spending 80 percent of their time at lower intensities and the remaining 20 percent at higher intensities.

Dr. Millan agreed with this division, telling the New York Times: “Zone 2 is part of it.” [for fat loss and fitness gains]

“But other intensities need to be done as well.”

#Precise #heart #rate #needed #burn #fat #promote #heart #health #highintensity #exercise

Many of you are probably familiar with the phrase “no pain, no gain.” But experts now say that advice may be wrong when it comes to burning fat and becoming healthier.
